Uncommon Voice - Effortless Bonnie Raitt

Bon Iver has done a remake cover of the 1990 "I Can't Make You Love Me", originally recorded by Bonnie Raitt.  Thing is, the Bon Iver version is great because it features true acoustic piano accompaniment and it's nice to re-appreciate this solemn ballad.  But the video below, Bonnie Raitt in concert, it's is simply exquisite.  Absolutely effortless and amazing.  The heartbreaking lyrics still kill me.

Stone Roses' Ian Brown and his single 'F.E.A.R.'

For each a road
For everyman a religion
Find everybody and rue
F*** everything and rumble
Forget everything and remember
For everything a reason
Forgive everybody and remember

For each a road
For everyman a religion
Face everybody and rue
F*** everything and rumble
Forget everything and remember
For everything a reason

F.E.A.R
F.E.A.R
F.E.A.R
F.E.A.R

Finding eternity arouses reactions
Freeing excellence affects reality
Fallen empires are ruling
Find earth and reap

Fantastic expectations  Amazing revelations
Final execution and resurrection
Free expression as revolution
Finding everything and realizing

You got the fear

Southern Sun by Indie Band "Boy & Bear"

I Don't Want You As A Ghost -

Well I want you as you are
Not some collapsing star
I'll wait I'll wait for good
What else can I do

I don't want you as a ghost
I don't want you as a fading light
I don't want to be the weight you carry
I just want to be the man you come home to every night

Well I want you as you are
Don't be someone you're not
The kids that we once were
They wouldn't know us now

I don't want you as a ghost
I don't want you as a fading light
I don't want to be the weight you carry
I just want to be the man you come home to every night

All The Way With You - John Prine

Had dinner with a beautiful, smart, witty and accomplished friend last night. She and her husband are huge John Prine fans and I'm so embarrassed to say that with the thousands of songs in my iTunes, I have no John Prine. This of course, is a terrible crime and intend to correct the dire situation right away.

Last night she played this song for me - "All The Way With You". The lyrics are so beautiful and Prine's voice is velvet and deep.  So authentic.  We listened to it together and talked about another dear person in my life.  This is that song.

Love gives
Love takes
It takes a lot of lucky breaks
Lucky strikes
Lucky stars
I don't know how I got this far
Who knows where it's coming from
Or where it's going to
Can I go all the way with you?

You have your way
You have your doubts
The falling in
The falling out
A bridge is built
A bridge is burned
Till you reach the point of no return
Don't know where we're coming from
Or where we're going to
Can I go all the way with you?

Heaven knows that this ain't nothing new
God knows how much I love you
Love comes
Love goes
Can I go all the way with you?
Can I go all the way with you?

Sweet Nuthin

Caught this song on satellite radio on the way between Peachland to Merritt this past July.  It's My Morning Jacket doing their amazing cover of Oh! Sweet Nuthin'.  I got sweet nothin too because it doesn't exist on iTunes.  Where the hell else do you get your music?

I just don't care for the voice of The Velvet Underground guy.  I love Jim James' voice.  It's just better to me.  He does an outstanding rendition of it.  And Channel 29 has it - someone must know how the hec to get it!

Harry Nilsson

Harry Nilsson isn't the household name it deserves to be, but not unlike Jimmy Webb, Harry Nilsson was responsible for the some of the most recognized pop songs of the 60's and 70's.

The documentary Who Is Harry Nilsson? is now playing on Netflix.

The film Midnight Cowboy was highlighted by its folk-roots soundtrack hit, "Everybody's Talkin'" and ironically, wasn't written by the prolific Nilsson.  Nevertheless, the song was a huge hit and earned the Grammy, as the 1969 film took Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

Clair de Lune, Claude Debussy's musical interpretation of Paul Verlaine's poem

Your soul is a chosen landscape
Where charming masqueraders and bergamaskers go
Playing the lute and dancing and almost
Sad beneath their fanciful disguises.

All sing in a minor key
Of victorious love and the opportune life,
They do not seem to believe in their happiness
And their song mingles with the moonlight,

With the still moonlight, sad and beautiful,
That sets the birds dreaming in the trees
And the fountains sobbing in ecstasy,
The tall slender fountains among marble statues.

Sparks to a Flame

I read on Danielle LaPorte’s site about this artist, Matisyahu, and discovered his record Spark Seekers. His first release is “Sunshine” – video here. Matisyahu is in transition - formerly a Hasidic Jew/Reggae Superstar, who has departed his devotion, and as Danielle wrote, ‘freed himself of his beard and forelocks and black suit’. Cool crossroads story for sure. I really like this single. Thanks Danielle. You rock.

Haunted By Love...

Canadian Dominique Fricot's single Haunted By Love is my new favourite song that I'm playing over and over again. It's got a great guitar - really great vocals...just the type of song I love.

The Great Lake Swimmers have a new recording....

Look at the names carved into us
Look at the days when they were lit up
Brushing my head and I feel their rage
Years of radiance, years of rain

And the world stops spinnin’ when you stop spinnin’
Sighs when you sigh when you sigh
I’m coming home so leave the light on for me
I’m drawing over the moon on this fell
When I’ll get in I will see you all there
I’m drawing on the great exhale

Certain grounds are water more likely
Translating names of lost families
Somebody’s sleeping and you should not wake
Drifting whispers over their grave

And the world stops spinnin’ when you stop spinnin’
Sighs when you sigh when you sigh
I’m coming home so leave the light on for me
I’m drawing over the moon on this fell
When I’ll get in I will see you all there
I’m drawing on the great exhale

Wide and open spaces
In a sleep along with time
Come to waiting places
Come tonight like all the dreams

I’m coming home so leave the light on for me
I’m drawing over the moon on this fell
When I’ll get in I will see you all there
I’m drawing on the great exhale

I’m soling in on the great exhale
